HR-SMS - My HR records by SMS   (Sat Dec 01 2007)

I'm thinking that Accelerate HR should allow people to access their own HR records via SMS.

Everyone's talking about self-service in HR, but usually that seems to mean on a computer. But most of my construction client's site workers have little or no access to a computer. On the other hand, the vast majority of them have mobiles.

So how would HR-SMS work? It would need to be as simple as possible, because most people's mobiles only have a small screen. And it would need to be secure - because mobiles are easily lost or stolen. A PIN number perhaps.

What about the contents? I'll kick off with a few ideas:

1. Salary. Has my salary been paid (auto-notification perhaps), and how much did I get?
2. Overtime. How many overtime hours did I work (specified date or period). What was I paid?
3. Absence. Report that I'm absent (or late) today and the reason.
4. Vacation. Apply for a vacation. Check how many vacation days I've earned. See how many people in my department have already booked vacation at the same time.

And now I'll turn it over to you. Would you use HR-SMS? OK, since you're reading this, you get your kicks from a computer - so maybe you wouldn't. But how about friends and colleagues? What would you or they like to check? Just remember, it's got to be simple, useful, quick and short.
